Stand out from others.
So to continue from where I left off, I chose to give my best to the new organization I had been employed in and not too long after I had settled down and undergone the prerequisite trainings my duties started pouring in. It seemed a bit tricky at first with the new processes and procedures but I was able to figure my way through. With time I started to develop skills in the new area I had been drafted to work in.
However, there was soon to been a change as I noticed that a new team had been set up to handle the second major task I was drafted to do. This inherently meant that not too long in the future my second task would be relinquished by them. Considering the fact that I was actually enjoying the new skill I was learning I kept thinking to myself what my daily activities in the office would be like without having this second task as part of my responsibility. Thus, I reached out to my direct head and requested that this second responsibility should not be taken from away from my list of duties. Of course my direct head was taken aback by my request and he in turn directed me to the appropriate channel to route my request to and this was how the said responsibility was added to my daily task.
When I made this request, I knew there was no monetary gain involved but nonetheless this did not stop from wanting to add value in whatever way I could because I noticed that I had understudied the job quite well and I kept telling myself that it was a bit too early to hand it over. Anyhow, after a year plus of attending appropriately to do this duty, I was compensated. This of course was one of the best surprises because if you recall, when I joined, there were speculations about there being a lack of growth. Not only did this occur, soon after my career started progressing and it went through consecutive progressions with benefits.
Now when I look back, I recall that at each point, each responsibility I was tasked with was linked to the next line of duty I was called upon to do such that, whatever challenges I experienced whilst overcoming each task when I moved to the next level, I noticed that the skills I had gained previously was an added advantage.
Hence, my closing point today is never to despise the days of little beginnings. I’m not saying that one should request for more than they can chew, but you never can tell, where you are headed with the various experiences that come your way. So it’s best to have an open mind. Another point to take home is the fact that only God has a final say in any man’s life. If I had accepted the speculations that were arising, probably it might’ve demotivated me from wanting to add value in whatever way I could to the organization but I chose not to let it deter me from giving back my best knowing whose report I believed.
Its so very easy to accept to fit in like the majority but when you choose to stand out of the majority, your reward lies in the hands of your maker. There are countless examples not only in the bible (e.g.the life of Daniel) but also in everyday experiences of people.
You get to decide what your path in this life will be.
To stand out OR to fit in.
