I seem to be writing a whole lot of articles of late so I decided to map a new category on the blog called “Magazine articles”. Enjoy reading today’s post.

Oh, Lagos!

All over the city people are grappling with all kinds of diverse situations that it’s become noteworthy to mention but a few. 

The current hike in the costs of automotive gas oil (fuel and diesel) has caused an upward spiral in living costs. There’s so much frustration in the air that lets you wonder if anarchy is silently looming. 

Many are suffering and enduring hunger, poverty, unemployment, lack of adequate shelter, a failing educational system, and the like.

As if this is not enough, we seem to be taking it out on one another forgetting that we all, are in the same boat.

The state of moral degradation, disunity, and loss of human life, leaves you wondering where exactly we are headed. 

The cause you ask? the depreciating value of the Naira. This particular factor caused fuel costs to soar incited by the global pandemic thereby leaving an attendant spiral in the cost of living.

However, is this enough reason to take it out on one another?

It’s gotten to the point that if we do nothing about taking out our frustrations on each other, a time will come when war may be the relevant solution. War you say? yes, a war between the rich and the poor.  

A low-income earner drives with so much spite and vexation, wondering why he is unable to afford a change of vehicle. He comes across a high-income earner that’s driving his coveted car and he doesn’t seem to care if his driving skills smashes his vehicle into that of the high-income earner. He could care less about the ensuing fight that may occur in the end. “No bring it on”, he says to himself, “I’m ready”. 

This is just one example.

Unknown to him that the high-income earner is doing all he can to survive and stay afloat with his finances. The cost of fueling and servicing this coveted car is causing a huge dip in his pocket. As if this is not enough, his rent of late is soaring from the hike in diesel costs, then there are his wards whom he has to put through expensive schools because of a failing educational system. Not forgetting his parents and extended family who deem him to be capable of solving their world of problems.

Now you see, even though the grass looks greener on the other side, it’s not the case. 

Let’s quit this bickering and fighting and unite to address the ills of our society. 

Change can only start with us.
