Medical Perspectives / Onuoma's Blog

I changed my perspective.

I’m yet to recover fully although I’ve resumed most of my activities.

I’m sure some you warriors would like to know what entails in a Core decompression surgery. Looking at some of the images on google it’s a bit hard to envisage, not so? Same thing I thought too.

The images make you believe that a prosthesis is inserted into the hip. Apparently, this is not the case. I went into the theater with this mindset until the orthopedic started the surgery. He looked at me and said “I’m about to drill a hole into your hips” and I responded “and then insert some pins to hold the pelvis and femur head together right? Is it plastic?” I asked, He looked at me clueless, wondering where I got my information from and said “No, there are no pins used. I’m simply drilling a hole to reduce pressure at your hips and in so doing, stopping the progression of the Avascular Necrosis”. “Oh!” I whispered to myself, “so the image I saw on google is simply a hole that was drilled into the region”.

It is not a rudimentary process, rather, the hole is drilled into the region using laser beams to cut through the bone.

Below is a picture of one of the images I’m referring to on google.

After the surgery, I felt more pain in my knee region and less on my hips. I noticed that I felt a bit of pain, only if I leaned on my left hip while sleeping or sitting. Apart from this, recovery, on this part of my body was less painful, as compared to my knee. Immediately, I got out of surgery and the anesthetics wore off, it was as if a log of wood had been placed on my knee.

I recall when I was being moved from the recovery room of the theater into the ward. The nurse on duty had to get an assistant to hold my knee steady while they wheeled me into the ward. Reason being, that the knee felt so heavy and painful. However, the oddest thing happened when I got to the ward. The knee felt lighter and I was able to hop to my bed without much assistance.

Today, I’ve chosen to share with you warriors some things that have been of help to me of late. It concerns my eating habits. Majority of you that have been following my journey recall my former eating habits stated in my post ‘A bit too much to swallow‘. After the constant downsides to my health especially regarding the incessant blood transfusions and my having to see a nutritionist, in my post ‘A change in the sequence of events.‘ I had cause to rethink certain things.

So here’s what I’m doing differently;

  • I’ve removed processed foods from my meals such as bread, spaghetti, and the like.
  • I eat more plant based foods such as grains, legumes, roots, tubers, etc. I also eat eggs and other protein rich foods.
  • I’ve infused my meals with fruits, nuts and vegetables.
  • I reintroduced fresh milk and removed powdered milk from my diet. This is a because a friend of mine pointed out that the sugar content in powdered milk is more compared to fresh milk. With fresh milk you get more proteins. So I use this for my cereals.
  • I try to drink lots of water, green tea, yoghurt and I avoid sodas.

I know one look at the above list may seem a bit boring but warriors, I’ve realized at this time in my life, that you are what you eat. Once in a while, It’s ok to give yourself a treat and indulge in processed foods but try not to make it a habit. I guess the only processed foods I’ve been unable to shelve are biscuits because I nibble them most times, if I’m hungry. However, I try not to buy over the edge, sugary ones.

Would you like to know the negative impact of processed foods in your diet? Well, it saps you of the nutrients you may have gained from eating plant based meals so that overtime you start to feel weak. Unknown to you, that eating such foods is the root cause behind the issue. I didn’t understand this until I took time to observe both situations.

Last of all, I was introduced to a plant based supplement that helps to promote general well being. It’s called ‘Spirulina’. You can get it to buy on amazon or at your local drug store.

Please warriors try to do things differently this year. The Orthopedic noted something to me that struck. He stated that many times when surgeries are performed on warriors there are many complications that could occur. it could be from dehydration, poor blood supply, heart rate, blood pressure and so on. The onus is therefore on us, to eliminate those things that have a negative impact on our well being.

My health has caused me to reevaluate some of my decisions in life. I hope you too can identify with me on this.

Until my next post, here’s wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Goodbye.
