Fuel Subsidy - The Aftermath / Onuoma's Blog

The startling effect.

Having discussed in detail the effect of the aftermath of fuel subsidy removal on the family and feeding patterns. It’s easy to deduce the ripple effect this has had on small and medium enterprises as well as larger organizations.

However, there’s one effect that many of us did not envisage.

During the last holidays when families and individuals traveled en masse to their various hometowns and villages for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, Many of them did not return to the cities where they dwelt as it was no longer the order of the day to do so.

The reason I believe stems from the fact that many of such individuals owned small and medium enterprises which thrived to stay afloat during the aftermath.

Secondly, some of these individuals realized that cost of living is way cheaper in their hometowns compared to the cities and this caused them to migrate.

So now we see a situation where certain cities in Nigeria – Lagos to be precise, may not be as densely populated due to large migrations that occurred. Not to omit the other individuals who relocated out of the country in search of a better life in more advanced societies.

To conclude, I guess we need to forge on with the hope that the prevalent situation in the country will ease over time.

Take care.
